Police detained IIT Baba Abhay Singh at a Jaipur hotel after he threatened suicide, but he was later released

Abhay Singh, known as “IIT Baba” after gaining public attention during the Maha Kumbh, was detained by Jaipur police on Monday. This action followed reports of him threatening self-harm via social media. Authorities received information that Singh was staying at a hotel near Riddhi Siddhi Park, where he was reportedly causing a disturbance.

Officers from the Shipra Path Police Station responded, taking Singh into custody at the Classic Hotel. During the detention, police discovered a small amount of marijuana in his possession. He was subsequently released after receiving a warning, as the quantity of the substance was considered minor.

According to DCP Digant Anand, the Shipra Path Police Station received a report of an attempted suicide by Abhay Singh at Hotel Park Classic. Upon arrival, officers identified Singh, a 35-year-old resident of Jhajjar, Haryana. When questioned, Singh produced a packet of marijuana, claiming to have consumed it and stating he was unaware of any statements he might have made while under its influence.

Police seized the 1.50-gram packet of marijuana, and Singh was released on bail after providing a surety, in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A case has been registered under the same act. Singh, however, characterized the marijuana as “prasad,” suggesting it’s commonly used by religious figures.

This incident occurred shortly after Singh alleged an assault during a television news debate in Noida on February 28. He claimed that individuals dressed in saffron clothing entered the studio and physically attacked him. Following this, Singh staged a protest outside a police outpost in Sector 126, which he later ended after discussions with police.
